Boy in a Circle
02:21
|
|||
Used to be he was always around
He's a boy In a circle now
He came to life when he came to town
But he's a boy in a circle now
He's a boy In a circle
His world was bigger,
full of open spaces.
Now he sees figures
where he once saw faces
He sees levels and
he moves among them.
He'd never drop names but
now you can't stop him.
Used to be he was always around
He's a boy in a circle now
He came to life when he came to town
But he's a boy in a circle now
He's a boy In a circle
We'd walk the street at nIght
smiling and waving.
He had a smile sometimes
so warm and engaging.
So warm and welcoming
new friends at each stop.
Now if you're not in
he won't look up.
The world is ours still
and he's still in it.
But what he thinks is done
is just beginning.
What he calls qualifiers
I call fear.
He's trapped by small desires
while I'm out here!
We're all out here.
Used to be he was always around
He's a boy in a circle now
He came to life when he came to town
But he's a boy in a circle now
He's a boy in a circle

Flounder
03:36
|
|||
I mingle.
I mingle with my unsweetened tea.
You swindle.
Swindled me out of uncertainty.
Don't take that from me.
I flounder
I flounder by the kitchen sink,
The counter.
The counter is higher than you think.
Maybe I'll take that drink.
I insist I'm not insisting on anything.
I insist I'm not resisting what is happening.
It's just happening ...
I linger.
I linger aimlessly tonight.
The screen door.
The screen door shuts and I'm upright
Now It's just you and I.
I insist I'm not insisting on anything.
I insist I'm not resisting what is happening.
It's just happening...
You're gone now.
You're gone and I can't even tell.
If I am ...
If I am happy or in hell.
Maybe it's just as well.
I insist I'm not insisting on anything.
I insist I'm not resisting what is happening.
It's just happening...

The Waiting
02:43
|
|||
You were so sweet
I was so cruel
I played the field.
You played the fool
You stayed away
and dried your tears.
Letting the days
stretch into years.
Time passed and I went with It
I don't know how you did it but...
You made the waiting look so easy.
You made the waiting look so easy.
I'm so amazed that I could ever be worth waiting for
The yearbook scrawl.
The cap and gown.
Then back again
in our home town
I don't know where
I'd ever be
If you weren't there
waiting for me.
I wish that I knew then that
you'd show up heaven·sent and ...
You made the waiting look so easy.
You made the waiting look so easy.
I'm so amazed that I could ever be worth waiting for.
Fluorescent lights did you no favors
behind schoolhouse doors.
I can't believe that my behavior
won a heart like yours.
Fluorescent lights did you no favors
but the sunshine does.
I can't believe you ever savored
the wild boy I was ...
You stepped out of the corner
and I dropped my school-age armor.
You made the waiting look so easy.
You made the waiting look so easy.
I'm so amazed that I could ever be worth waiting for.

Step Outside
01:54
|
|||
Step outside and it's summer,
any day of the year.
Let the snowflakes land!
Let the rain prevail!
'Cause without fail,
you take my hand
and summer's here!
The season changes but
your style ages well
and I can tell it will be
a little while.
Through global warming
you've a charming rationale
for every trauma
that does not end in denial.
Let the snowflakes land!
Let the rain prevail!
'Cause without fail.
you take my hand
and summer's here!
ahhhhhh
Step outside and it's summer,
any day of the year
Let the snowflakes land!
Let the rain prevail!
'Cause without fail,
you take my hand
and summer's here!

Happiest in History
02:56
|
|||
The songs we sang last winter
have been on my mind
Feeling sad and bitter
from what we've left behind.
Winter into summer.
Sunshine into us.
A memory I've built up
'til it's nothing like it was.
Don't know what I'm asking for anymore
Can't go where I used to go before.
The songs we sang last summer
still ring in my ear.
Now I sit and wonder
as they disappear.
Summer into winter.
The shadows on the floor
were alii could conSider
when I walked out the door.
Where do you go to when the music ends?
When do you try to let new songs begin?
Time has an appetite for apathy.
I know It's hard
to just believe that
we are happiest
in history.
It took a second look but
Boston came alive,
from the public gardens
to private drives.
Out my first-floor window
people march right by.
Some are going somewhere.
Some have just arrived.
The sun's back on the sidewalk
and suddenly I've found
the songs we sang last summer
sound so much sweeter now.
Don't want to anymore, anyhow
I've got to do it like I want to now.
Time has an appetite for apathy.
I know it's hard
to just believe that
we are happiest
in history.
